REVIEW: Sister Ray, Liverpool

Class cocktails in Liverpool City Centre

Liverpool’s cocktail bar scene is on the up and up, and one of the latest additions to Liverpool’s ever-growing nightlife is Sister Ray. Combining the cafe culture of your favourite French coffee shops with the swanky New York bar scene, Sister Ray is a chic cocktail bar in Wolstenholme Square, in Liverpool City Centre (L1 4JJ). I popped in for a visit to explore their cocktail menu.

One thing about me is that I’m always going to sit at the bar – whether it’s a bar or restaurant, if there’s an option to park myself up at the bar, I’m there. And man has Sister Ray got a nice little bar set up. Well, actually it’s a not-so-little bar setup. With space for around 8 to 10 people (I want to say, anyway) at the bar, there’s plenty of room to set yourself up for a pint, glass of wine, or a great cocktail. So I did just that.

What to order at Sister Ray, Liverpool

There’s a nice little selection of wines, spirits and beers on the menu, but I’d gone in to try the cocktails so I did just that. To start, I made the most of their £7.50 spritz deal (before 7:00 pm) and ordered a bitter but refreshing Venetian Spritz. It was a lovely sunny day in Liverpool so it felt rude not to embrace Aperitivo Hour. If you love a) an Aperol Spritz and b) drinks on the bitter side, then this is 100% for you. I’m a fan of both and this was a winner in my eyes.

After this, I wanted to try something I wouldn’t ordinarily make for myself at home, their Bisou Sour. Cognac meets Calvados in this balanced cocktail with a boozy kick – I think I can speak for most of us in saying that Cognac and Calvados aren’t exactly staples in most people’s at-home bars, so it’s always a treat getting a cocktail made with either when you’re out and about. I also got to try a White Negroni (off-menu at the time!) which was earthy and balanced, thanks to its incorporation of the earthy French Aperitif, Suze.

It might’ve been a glorious sunny spot on a Friday afternoon but I can see how Sister Ray would really come alive on a Friday or Saturday night. If you’re visiting the city and looking for a new cocktail bar to check out, I couldn’t recommend Sister Ray enough. I know I’ll be back soon for a proper evening out.
