Seville Food Guide: Authentic Tapas Bars and Local Wines to Order

Skip the tourist traps – these are the traditional tapas bars worth visiting in Seville, plus my guide to ordering the best local wines.

If you count yourself a genuine food lover, Seville belongs at the top of your travel list. Widely considered one of the ultimate culinary cities in Spain, it’s a phenomenal hub for tapas culture. The city is home to thousands of bars, meaning you’re only ever a few steps away from an incredible meal.

Of all the places I’ve travelled, Seville is a destination that has truly stayed with me. It’s always one of the first cities I recommend; it’s the capital of Andalusia, yet it feels entirely intimate and walkable. There’s beautiful history to uncover around every corner, but more than anything, it’s a city built around the art of eating and drinking.

If you are planning a trip and want to bypass the crowded plazas for something genuine, these are the standout tapas bars to visit, and my insider tips on the best local wines to order.

Eslava

Calle Eslava, 3, Casco Antiguo, 41002 Sevilla, Spain

I’m throwing all the rules out the window and starting with dessert – this place is just too good. Three words: cheese ice cream. Tucked away in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood, Eslava has achieved a sort of legendary, heritage status in Seville. The vibe here is completely magnetic; it’s a brilliant, bustling mix of fashionable locals, neighbourhood characters, and travelling food-lovers all squeezed into a lively bar. It’s the true essence of Seville.

What to order at Eslava:

  • Cheese Ice Cream: This dish completely blew me away. Served with a sprig of fresh lemon thyme, a sweet wafer biscuit, and a rich, textured jam, it’s easily one of the finest desserts I have ever tasted. It’s essentially a frozen, intensely flavourful version of a premium cheesecake – weirdly wonderful and entirely worth booking a trip to Seville for.
  • The Spinach and Ricotta “Cigarro”: Continuing with the cheese focus, this savoury plate is spectacular. It features a long, crisp roll of delicate filo pastry stuffed with a light spinach and ricotta filling. Accompanied by a striking squid ink béchamel sauce – the ultimate balance of flavour and texture, pairing beautifully alongside a glass of the house red wine.

Cinco Jotas

Calle de Castelar, 1, Casco Antiguo, 41001 Sevilla, Spain

Cinco Jotas quickly became one of my absolute favourite afternoon spots in the city. While it’s internationally renowned for its heritage and world-class culinary roots, the design of this particular space is what truly sets the tone.

The interior architecture is stunning. The absolute focal point is a beautiful, rounded, circlular central bar that commands the attention of the room instantly – I’ve always had a weakness for a layout where the bar takes centre stage. Floating directly above it is a striking mezzanine level that serves as a dedicated display for lush green plants and independent wine bottles, creating a space that feels fresh, airy, and entirely sophisticated. It’s a gorgeous sanctuary to escape the intense midday heat.

What to order at Cinco Jotas:

  • Rosé and light snacks: Secure a stool right at that curved central counter, order a chilled glass of vino rosado (rosé), and snack on a bowl of giant, local green olives. It’s a wonderfully simple, stylish way to watch the afternoon pass.

An Insider’s Guide to Ordering Wine in Seville

Your cheat sheet to enjoying the best of local and regional wines in Seville, Spain.

Ordering wine in Seville can feel incredibly intimidating if you don’t know the local vernacular. The region bypasses generic house reds in favour of historic, intensely complex fortified wines and crisp, refreshing whites tailored for the Andalusian heat. To drink like a local, skip the standard vino blanco and look towards more local regional wines on the menu. Here are the wines to drink in Seville, and the time of day you should drink them.

The Afternoon: The “Aperitivo” Hour

When the sun is high, and you’re at a bar like Cinco Jotas for olives or light bites, you want something light, saline, and bone-dry to cut the heat.

  • Manzanilla (sherry): The ultimate afternoon drink. Coastal, refreshing, and just a hint of sea salt.
  • Fino (sherry): Sharp, cold, and almond-forward. The classic choice for a midday sipper.
  • Dry White Wines (Vino de la Tierra): If you prefer a still wine, look for any white Vino de la Tierra de Andalucía. They are mineral-forward and crisp.

The Evening: Tapas & Main Plates

As the day winds down and you’re sitting at Eslava for richer, more complex dishes, you want wines with more weight and personality to stand up to the food.

  • Amontillado or Oloroso (sherry): These sherry styles are deeper and nuttier. They are the perfect match for heartier meat tapas or aged cheeses.
  • Local Mediterranean Rosés: If you want something elegant and versatile that carries you from light starters to main courses.
  • Easy-Drinking Local Reds: Look for regional Andalusian reds. They are usually medium-bodied and smooth, making them much more “drinkable” in the warm evenings than heavy, tannic imports.

The Nightcap

For the quintessential end-of-the-night treat, look for something sweet, warming and silken.

  • Pedro Ximénez | PX (sherry): It’s intensely sweet, dark, and syrupy – perfectly poured over vanilla ice cream or enjoyed on its own as a liquid dessert.
