Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde 2023

Portuguese white wine review

When the sun’s out and I fancy a wine that’s crisp, light, and just a little bit different, you’ll often find me reaching for Vinho Verde. This Portuguese white wine is citrusy, refreshing, and, for a still wine, has a slightly fizzy texture (sounds odd, but don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it!).  Even if you’re new to Vinho Verde, chances are you’ve heard of the internet’s favourite bottle – Chin Chin. And while it’s a great place to start, it’s definitely not where your Vinho Verde journey should end. There are SO many more bottles out there waiting to be chilled, poured, and enjoyed. One of my latest favourites? The Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde 2023.

Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde, Tasting Notes

Grassy green-yellow in colour, the first impression I got from the Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde was light citrus and an overall freshness. Then came a sharp kick of gooseberry, making way for some light floral aromas – think sitting outside on freshly cut grass, lemonade in hand, soaking up the summer.

On the palate, this Vinho Verde was exactly what I’d hoped for: dry, acidic, and citrus-led, with notes of lemon, gooseberry, and a touch of pear. It’s tart, refreshing, and light in flavour, but surprisingly, a little more textural than expected. I went in thinking it would be super lightweight, but for me, the Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo Vinho Verde leans toward medium-bodied, which gives it a lovely balance.

The finish is clean, citrusy, and long-lasting in the best way. It’s a wine made for hot days. Pair it with seafood (I had it alongside prawns and scallops), or simply chill it down and sip it solo on a sunny afternoon.
