Sparkling wines for Christmas and New Year’s Eve
Whether you’re looking for a crisp and citrusy cava, a light and fruity prosecco, a rounded and full champagne or an appley English Sparkling wine, I’ve got picks for each of them (and a few extra sparkling wines for New Year’s Eve too!).
Halfpenny Green Brut (English sparkling wine)
Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is a Staffordshire-based winery producing quality red, white, rose and sparkling English wines. I’d previously tried their Pinot Noir, which was absolutely beautiful, but it’s their sparkling wine that I’m highlighting here. Their current sparkling wine range consists of four bottles but, for me, their Brut Sparkling (2021) is the ultimate celebratory sparkling wine. Pale golden, this sparkling wine leads with crisp apples, followed by pear and honey. With fine bubbles and a really soft texture, this a serious celebration wine that would be perfect for New Year’s Eve. RRP £25.50, online at Halfpenny Green Wine Estate.
Journey’s End Cap Classique MCC (South African Sparkling Wine)
Striking deep yellow in colour with a super citrusy nose – Journey’s End Cap Classique MCC is one of my top picks for South African sparkling wine. This is a truly balanced bottle of sparkling wine combining apple and pear with flavours of pastry and brioche. It was almost like a tarte tatin! Crisp bubbles and a long finish – this is the perfect mid-afternoon bottle for Christmas Day. RRP £22.50, available online at Noble Green Wines.

Cune Cava Brut NV
There’s only one Cava on this list for a reason – I think the Cune Cava Brut NV might just be my favourite Cava yet. It has it all. Crisp and light with super fresh citrus on the nose, but creamy and smooth on the palate – it’s just so well-balanced. The Cune Cava Brut NV has all the dryness that you expect from a Cava and the classic green apple and pear flavours, but it also has some lovely sweet honey in there to soften everything out. If you’re a Cava fan then this has to be on your list this festive season. RRP £16.99, available at Majestic.
Van Hunks MCC rosé brut (South African sparkling wine)
London-based, South African. Van Hunks’ MCC rosé brut is a light and dry South African sparkling wine that leads with a very surprisingly earthy flavour, followed by lovely red fruits. This is the perfect unexpected bottle of bubbly to kick off your celebrations with and would make a brilliant aperitif for Christmas Day. Read my full review of Van Hunks MCC rosé on Female Original. RRP £20.00, available online at Vank Hunks.
Wildflower Brut Sparkling (Australian sparkling wine)
Another sparkling that would make the perfect Christmas Day aperitif has to be Wildflower Brut Sparkling, a dry and citrusy Australian sparkling. Crisp green apple and lemon citrus meet toasted nuts in this beautiful bottle that’s perfect to toast to the New Year! RRP £13.95, available online at Cheers Wine Merchants.

Della Vite Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G
For a dry, crisp and citrusy prosecco, with a mineral quality to it, Della Vite Superiore DOGC would be my pick for Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve. Produced in collaboration with sister Chloe, Poppy, and Cara Delevigne and the Biasiotto family, Della Vite is a sustainable and vegan-certified prosecco that doesn’t rely on its famous connections. It’s a truly quality bottle that deserves its place on your table this Christmas. Why not get a bottle in to ring in the New Year? RRP £22.00, available online at Della Vite or supermarkets including Sainsbury’s.
La Gioiosa Prosecco Rose Millesimato
For a great glass of rosé prosecco under £10.00, I don’t think you can do much better than La Gioiosa’s Prosecco Rose Millesimato. Light pink in colour but full of red fruit flavour, this is an easy crowd-pleaser perfect for kicking off your celebrations this Christmas and New Year. At around £9.00 a bottle, you can’t go wrong. RRP £9.00, available at local supermarkets including TESCO.
Champagne PIAFF Brut
It wouldn’t be a sparkling wine round-up without a beautiful bottle of Champagne, would it? My pick for celebration Champagne is Champagne PIAFF Brut, a well-rounded Champagne with soft and mousse-like bubbles. Leading with pear and apple, this is a great example of top-quality Champagne that would impress any guest this festive season. RRP £42.00, available online at Champagne PIAFF.
