Moillard Crémant de Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021
The lesser-known sister to Champagne gets a refresh from Moillard.
You’ve heard of Champagne, Cava, Prosecco – even English Sparkling – but Champagne’s not-so-distant cousin, Crémant, is quietly making a name for itself on our supermarket shelves. The latest beauty to grace us with her presence is Moillard Crémant de Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021, a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs (‘white of whites’ – aka, it uses white grapes only) sparkling wine hailing from just south of Champagne, in the Burgundy region.
The Moillard Story
One of Burgundy’s oldest wine houses, Moillard has been crafting wines in the region since the late 18th century. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the house is best known for its work with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, building a reputation rooted in craftsmanship and precision rather than show.
Widely recognised for its sparkling wines, Moillard works with traditional winemaking techniques while embracing a modern approach – from state-of-the-art facilities to extended ageing – all with a clear focus on balance, quality, and accessibility at an approachable price point.

The Elegance of Crémant
Moillard’s Crémant de Bourgogne uses the same technique as Champagne-making, but we know the drill: just because a wine is made the same way as Champagne doesn’t mean it is Champagne. Only wines made using this method in the Champagne region can be officially called Champagne. So while the Moillard Crémant is a méthode traditionnelle (traditional method) sparkling wine, it’s made in Burgundy – making it a Crémant.
The result? A sparkling wine with the elegance of some of our favourite Champagnes, for a fraction of the cost.

Moillard Crémant de Bourgogne Tasting Notes
Once poured, the Crémant is pale lemon in colour, immediately signalling freshness. On the nose, bright citrus leads, followed by warmer, cosy notes of toasted bread, fresh pastry and brioche – reminiscent of my Saturday morning pastry run. There’s a subtle saline edge running through it too, lifting everything nicely.
On the palate, it’s clean and bright – lemon and crisp green apple up front, with those same pastry notes returning underneath. The wine is dry and refreshing, with a bold acidity softened by gentle bubbles, giving it a smooth, almost foamy texture.
Moillard have delivered something special here – an elegant Crémant de Bourgogne that feels considered, polished, and very easy to enjoy.
