10 Affordable Supermarket Wines Under £10

Budget-friendly & delicious wines to pick up at your local supermarket.

It’s Friday night, and you’re in your local supermarket panic-browsing the wine aisle in the hopes of finding the perfect bottle of wine to bring to your mate’s house…ideally without spending more than a tenner. We’ve all been there. And with so many options to choose from, you can easily end up picking up something that you might regret. There are loads of brilliant deals to be had in the £10 and under wine mark, but the problem is knowing where to start. So, I thought I’d put my supermarket wine knowledge to good use and share a list of 10 of my favourite affordable supermarket wines under £10 that you can find online or in-store at your local TESCO, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Morrison’s…you get the picture.

Great affordable white wines on a budget

I’ve tried my fair share of white wines over the years – some were big hitters, while others tasted more like vinegar than vino. Finding a great budget-friendly white wine can be a bit hit and miss, but the key is knowing what to look for. The good news? I’ve done the trial and error for you. My top three budget white wines deliver on both flavour and affordability. No vinegar wines here, I promise.

Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier

If there’s any of the below that I’d call my best-kept secret (…I guess it’s a not-so-well-kept secret anymore), it’s the Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier. It was the first Viognier I tried, so in some ways it’s a bit of a nostalgic wine for me. But, I can confidently say that nostalgia isn’t clouding my vision (or impacting my palate) when I tell you that this is, in my opinion, the best bargain Viognier. It’s dry, fruity and has a great body to it. I’ve recommended it to all of my wine-loving friends, and they’ve gone on to recommend it to theirs, so it has the stamp of approval. At £7.75 in TESCO (£6.25 with a Clubcard), you better snap it up.

Gordon Ramsay Pinot Grigio

I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest Pinot Grigio fan (sorry!). But, as it’s one of the most popular white wines in the UK, I’d be doing you a bit of a disservice not including a Pinot Grigio in my affordable wine picks. To represent the category, I’ve gone with an award-winning Pinot Grigio from Gordon Ramsay. Crisp, dry and refreshing, but with a hint of tropical fruits, which truly won me over.  It’s everything that sums up Pinot Grigio… with a tropical twist. At £9.25 in TESCO, it’s a really solid price too.

Dark Horse Chardonnay

With Chardonnay being such a versatile grape, there’s a whole spectrum of different bottles to explore – from crisp and dry to weighty and oaky. For my third white wine pick, I’m heading more towards the weighty and oaky end of Chardonnay with the Dark Horse Chardonnay. I know oaked Chardonnay often divides opinion – some love it, some hate it. For me, buttery Chardonnay is an absolute winner – and, whilst I’m a fan of a crisp, dry and green-apple-flavoured Chardonnay on a Summer afternoon, oaked Chardonnay is no.1 for me. The Dark Horse Chardonnay is super buttery but balanced with stone fruits and apples. RRP £10.75 Ocado (on offer for £9.00)

Best supermarket red wine under £10

I’m a red wine girl to my core, so limiting my selection of supermarket red wines down to three was a tough one. But, for you, I managed to do it (how lucky you are). Of red, white, rosé and sparkling, I find it by a mile the easiest to discover great red wine on a budget, which explains why my list could so easily be about 30 bottles long (and maybe one day I’ll share them all with you). But, for now, we’ve got a great Merlot, Zinfandel and Côtes du Rhône all under £10.

Carnivor Zinfandel

Zinfandel became one of my favourite red wines and grape varieties after taking my WSET level 2. I’d always been a fan of Primitivo but it wasn’t until studying for my second wine qualification that I found out that Primitivo and Zinfandel were actually the same grape (explains my love of both). The Carnivor Zinfandel is a great example of the Zinfandel grape variety, it’s bold and full of red and black fruits, with a little spice. Technically, this bottle is over my £10.00 limit but, with a TESCO Clubcard, you can nab yourself a bottle for £9.50 (£11.00 without a TESCO Clubcard).

Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône

For my second affordable red wine, we’ve got the Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône. It’s a great entry-level Côtes du Rhône so if you’re interested in dipping your toe into this style of wine, it’s a fantastic bottle to start (and won’t break the bank). 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, this bottle is packed with ripe red fruits along with a kick of pepper and spice to balance things out. RRP £9.75 Ocado

Dark Horse Merlot

I have a saying that all Merlot is good Merlot…which I’m sure will divide opinion. I don’t necessarily mean it in the literal sense, because I’m certain there are more than a few not-so-good Merlots out there. What I do mean is I find that Merlots are the most consistently solid red wines to order. And, in my experience, I haven’t had a bad one. Anyway, we aren’t here for bang-average wines, are we? We want the best Merlots on a budget and for me, you can’t go wrong with Dark Horse Merlot. It’s top of the budget at £10.00 a bottle but this Californian Merlot is packed with jammy dark fruits, warming on the palate and packs a little spice kick too. I’ve got a full review on this bottle because I love it so much, so if you need any more persuading, be sure to check that out. Pick it up at TESCO

Affordable rosé wine under £10

When it comes to great rosé under £10, I’ll admit it’s slim pickings out there. My go-to rosé is often Côtes de Provence which I struggle to find for anything less than around £13. But, you only need one great go-to rosé and lucky for you whilst the options are limited I have a great Sauvignon Blush that fits into this category perfectly.

Villa Maria Sauvignon Blush

Dry, crisp and fruity are the three words I’d use to describe the Villa Maria Sauvignon Blush. With fresh flavours of passionfruit and cranberry sitting at the forefront of this bottle, it’s a lovely fruit-forward rosé ideal as we come into Spring/Summer sipping (but who says you can’t enjoy crisp rosé all year round?). Whilst it’s right at the top of the price bracket for budget wines, you can easily save a little extra cash if you’ve got a TESCO Clubcard (£10.75 full price or £9.00 with a TESCO Clubcard).

Sparkling wines under £10

Rounding us off are my top three picks for sparkling wines under £10 that you can easily pick up at your local supermarket.

A bottle of La Gioiosa Rose Prosecco.

Mionetto Prosecco Doc

For a staple prosecco to have in stock, Mionetto Prosecco DOC is always my top pick. It’s dry and crisp and works equally as well when mixed into cocktails as it does by itself. If you’re looking for a simple dry prosecco that always delivers and doesn’t break the bank, this is the go-to. RRP £11.50 Sainsbury’s (£8.50 Nectar price)

La Gioiosa Prosecco Rosé Millesimato

Moving onto pink prosecco, my no.1 bottle under £10 is the La Gioiosa Prosecco Rose Millesimato. Again, this is a dry fizz, but it has slightly more red fruit flavour than a lot of bargain rosé proseccos do. If you prefer a more fruity pink fizz but still want a dryness, this ticks all the boxes. And at £9.50 it’s great value too. RRP £10.50 TESCO

Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut Cava

To finish off my guide to affordable supermarket wines, it had to be a cava. Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut Cava is a classic…and for a good reason. The statement black bottle will definitely entice you, but the crisp apple and fresh citrus flavours will have you purchasing it over and over again. RRP £11.00 TESCO (£8.50 Clubcard).
