Denbies Rose Hill Rosé Review

A vibrant English Rosé wine

English rosé might not always get the same love as its sparkling siblings, but trust me, it’s well worth a pour. Plus, who doesn’t love an underdog? If you’re just getting into English wine and tend to lean towards rosé over white or red, Denbies Rose Hill Rosé is a cracking place to start.

Crisp, fresh and super easy-drinking, it comes from Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey – one of the largest vineyards in the UK. When I think of English wine, my mind always goes straight to the South East (though there are brilliant bottles coming from as far as Staffordshire, too). But Surrey feels like the heart of it all. Whilst sparkling might get all the attention, there’s loads to love in the world of English reds, whites and rosés. This bottle’s a great way in. Want the full lowdown on Denbies Rose Hill Rosé? Let’s get into it.

Denbies Rose Hill Rosé, Tasting Notes

Pale blush in colour, the scent of this English rosé started just as I expected – light red fruits (strawberries, raspberries), sharp citrus, and a slightly grassy note too. But then, something completely unexpected… tropical fruit. As a cool-climate wine (Surrey isn’t exactly sun-soaked), I was genuinely surprised to pick up tropical notes on the nose of this rosé. Totally unexpected! Maybe my nose was playing tricks on me, or maybe not. If you’ve tried Denbies Rose Hill Rosé, let me know; did you catch anything tropical about it too?

On the palate, it’s sharp, crisp and citrussy with lovely red fruits and a kick of acidity. No tropical fruit though (maybe my nose was playing tricks on me!). As an introduction to English rosé, Denbies’ Rose Hill is a fantastic start. And, at under a tenner when you buy direct from Denbies, it’s a brilliant price too. Enjoy it on its own as an aperitif, or pair it with baked Camembert or Seafood Risotto – ideally with some unlikely British sunshine as well.
