Arthur Metz Gewürztraminer review
A floral, honeyed French white wine from Alsace.
Floral, aromatic, and very rarely subtle, Gewürztraminer (guh-VURTS-trah-mee-ner) is a grape variety known for its strong perfumy character and gentle honeyed notes. Its unique flavour profile certainly divides opinion, but I sit firmly in team pro-Gewürz. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s an all-time favourite wine of mine.
In its most classic form, Gewürztraminer is most often associated with Alsace in France, where it tends to lean into richer honeyed notes alongside its signature florality. It’s a style that feels instantly recognisable once you’ve had it a few times – bold aromas, a soft, rounded texture, and flavours that linger. It knows exactly what it is and isn’t shy about it. The Arthur Metz Gewürztraminer 2019 is a classic example of that style and a good starting point for exploring everything that Gewürztraminer has to offer.

Arthur Metz Gewürztraminer
Just behind Riesling, Gewürztraminer is the second most-planted grape variety in Alsace, where Arthur Metz is based. While Riesling tends to take most of the attention, Gewürztraminer is the one that really announces itself – and this bottle is a good place to understand why it earns its spot on the list.
For a wine known for big, expressive aromas, the Arthur Metz Gewürztraminer is surprisingly pale in colour. But that doesn’t tell you much. On the nose, it opens straight into blossom and honeysuckle, with a soft sweetness underneath. Citrus and pear follow quite quickly, cutting through the richer honeyed side before it gets too much.

On the palate, it follows a similar pattern. The floral notes are upfront again, with honeysuckle right at the centre. It’s a full-bodied white, so there’s a bit of weight to it, but it never feels heavy. Citrus keeps it moving, and there’s a gentle mineral note in the background that stops everything from becoming too soft or sweet.
It could easily tip too far in one direction, but between the sweetness, florality and citrus, it manages to stay balanced. It’s a classic Alsace Gewürztraminer from start to finish, without ever falling flat.
