With February coming to an end it’s officially time for the next playlist in my new 2020 blog series The Legend Slot. Last month I kicked off the series with a 35-track playlist of what I thought were Elton John’s greatest tracks. I listened to every one of his studio albums throughout the month and shared my favourite songs in one playlist. And I’m back to do it all again this month (and the rest of the year too!). If you’ve found yourself here and have missed the first post in the series then head back and give that a quick read here. It’ll explain The Legend Slot concept in a bit more detail. And if you’ve already caught up then great! Lets get cracking on the second artist playlist: Kylie Minogue.
So, a bit about the OG Kylie…Kylie Minogue is an Australian singer and songwriter who’s known as a bit of a ‘pop princess‘. She actually started her career off as an actress before she moved onto her hugely successful singing career. You might have heard of a (not-so) little show called Neighbours which Kylie starred in back in the 80s. Filmed in her home city of Melbourne, Kylie played Charlene Mitchell in her late teens before beginning her music career in the late 80s.
‘X’ (2007) – Kylie Minogue
As a massive fan of Kylie in the 2000s, I knew that she had to make a feature in this series. She was one of the musicians that I grew up listening to and was a bit of an icon for a lot of my generation. Despite having been on the music scene for over a decade, the 2000s where when I first came across her music. Having only ever listen to her music after the 2000s I thought it was about time I listened to her older stuff! And what better way to do that than to include her in The Legend Slot?
The Legend Slot: Kylie Minogue
After spending January listening to 30 Elton John albums, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Kylie only had 14 of them. And one of them was a Christmas album (which I definitely wasn’t going to listen to in the middle of February). So, 13 albums later the second playlist is ready to go!
A Few of My Favourites…
There were plenty of tracks that I was already excited to listen to again when I was going into this playlist. Childhood favourites like Spinning Around, Better The Devil You Know and Love At First Sight were among some of those that I was most excited to hear. But a few standout old-but-new to me tracks (told you I’d be using this phrase a lot) were Kids and In Your Eyes. I remember singing along to both of them on SingStar PopWorld for the PlayStation 2 when I was around 8. And now whenever I listen to them I always think back to that game.
‘Light Years‘ (2000) – Kylie Minogue
A song that I completely forgot existed and was so excited to rediscover was Red Blooded Woman from her Body Language album. It’s one of those tracks that I remember loving when it first came out but I haven’t thought about once since about 2004. Now that it’s back on my radar I will definitely be adding it to my workout playlist!
As for new discoveries, most of them were from her first few albums. I knew the classics like The Loco-Motion and I Should Be So Lucky but there were plenty that I’d never come across before. One of my new favourites was Look My Way from her first album, Kylie. It just sounded like the most typical 80s song in the most fabulous way. You’ll know that I love a bit of 80s music if you followed along with last years series, Music Monthly. Back in June I shared a New Wave playlist as a sort of celebration of 80s music so listening back to Kylie’s 80s tracks was a lot of fun!
Not quite finished hearing all about the ultimate pop princess that is Kylie Minogue? I’d 100% recommend checking out some clips from her Glastonbury set last Summer. There’s plenty of clips on YouTube so go and have a browse! Have you listened to much of Kylie’s music before? Which tracks are your favourites of hers?
Who do you want to see next? Send me your suggestions as there are still 10 more playlists to go! I’d love to know who you think should be featured in the series so make sure to comment below.
