The Legend Slot: David Bowie

Fifth playlist in The Legend Slot lets goooo! I’m back to the solo artists for this month and am taking you through rock and pop legend David Bowie.

David Bowie

Born in London in 1947, David Bowie (born David Robert Jones) was a singer-songwriter and actor considered to be one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He worked across art rock, as well as pop, electronic and experimental genres of music throughout his six-decade career before his death from liver cancer in 2016. Also known as Ziggy Stardust, Bowie explored glam rock throughout his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)  where he became the androgynous fictional character of Ziggy.

Throughout his career Bowie became one of the world’s best-selling artists and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. He released eleven number-one albums and was even given the title of The Greatest Rock Star Ever by Rolling Stone Magazine. A pretty legendary musician if you ask me!

The Legend Slot: David Bowie

First things first, this playlist is a biggie compared to some of my others. But I promise you it’s full of amazing tunes. I usually try to keep the playlists to around 30-40 songs but for Bowie I went up to 49. This was pretty much just because I already knew so many of his tracks. Before I’d even started listening to the albums I’d added almost 30 songs to the playlist! By the time I’d finished listening I had almost 60 songs on there. I just about managed to cut it down to 49 songs…here’s what I picked.

A Few of My Favourites…

I think out of all the legends that I’ve featured so far Bowie is the one with the most hits in my opinion. Well, the most hits that I knew already anyway. When it comes to my favourites I have way more than a few to talk about. You’ve got the big hits like Space Oddity, Life On Mars?, Starman, Let’s Dance and Heroes which are of course favourites of mine. But then there’s also Rebel Rebel, Ashes To Ashes and Changes which were all bangers as well. The latter of which will forever remind me of Shrek 2 (anyone else?). The list goes on…

"The Man Who Sold The World" (1970) album cover, David Bowie.

‘The Man Who Sold The World’ (1970) – David Bowie.

So aside from all of them I have a couple of favourites that I guess aren’t quite as well-known as the others. But don’t get wrong, they’re still massive hits that you’ll most likely recognise. The first is The Man Who Sold The World from the album…The Man Who Sold The World (1970). The number of times that I’ve heard this over the years and had to Shazam it because I could never remember what it was called is ridiculous. It’s probably my most searched for song ever.

A Few More Favourites…

Young Americans from, yep you guessed it, Young Americans (1975) is another favourite that I completely forgot about until I watched Always Be My Maybe on Netflix a while back. It was the opening song to the film and ever since I heard it then it’s been on all of my playlists. Oh and Oh! You Pretty Things as well! I’m really not doing so well at this whole ‘choose a few songs’ thing this month am I?

Blackstar (2016) album cover, David Bowie.

‘Blackstar’ (2016) – David Bowie.

Also I definitely need to count his final album, Blackstar (2016), as a favourite. I could’ve so easily added the entirety of Blackstar to this playlist if I’m completely honest. It was released on his 69th birthday, two days before his death in 2016 and is such an amazing album. The fact that he wrote it knowing he was dying as a ‘parting gift’, however, is absolutely heartbreaking. If there’s one album to go away and listen to after reading this then it has to be Blackstar.

New Discoveries

I have to say, 90s Bowie really wasn’t my thing at all. I managed to pick out a couple of songs from the decade but I found it a bit of a slog listening to the 90s albums if I’m completely honest. Even legendary artists have less legendary phases it seems! But, despite not being a fan of the 90s stuff I did managed to discover loads of new tracks. As I always do!

The Next Day (2013) album cover, David Bowie.

‘The Next Day’ (2013) – David Bowie.

As far as the new discoveries go, Valentine’s Day from The Next Day (2013) was definitely up their with the new favourites. The only song that I knew from The Next Day was Where Are We Now?, which you’ll notice I featured in the playlist too. So it was interesting to listen to the whole album and pick out some new favourites.

Low (1977) album cover, David Bowie.

‘Low’ (1977) – David Bowie.

Another sort-of-new discovery was Sound and Vision from Low (1977). I say sort of because I’m not actually sure if it’s one that I’d never heard before until this playlist. I think maybe I’ve heard really short snippets of it over the years but never the entire song. It has that kind of familiar sound to it which makes me think that it’s been in a film soundtrack before. Maybe I’ve just heard it in a shop or something. Either way the “blue blue electric blue” lyrics were definitely familiar to me.

So that’s Bowie. Have you listened to much of Bowie’s music before? Do you have any favourite songs of his? I’d love to know. Let me know if you’ve discovered any new tracks from reading and listening to the playlist too. If you’ve got a suggestion for The Legend Slot then make sure to send it my way! Feel free to email me or DM me on Twitter or Instagram with your suggestion.

Also, one quick question… do you say Bowie as in a bow tie or Bowie as in take a bow? Let me know in the comments!

Like everyone, I know a fair amount of Bowie stuff but I’ve never been a huge fan so I’m sure there are so many songs that I don’t know of so this playlist is probably a great discovery tool for me. I don’t actually think I’ve heard a single track from either of his last two albums so I should probably give those a listen too x

That was the same for me. I know and love a lot of the hits but I’d never listened to any albums in full. The last two are great! x

Yes! I was wondering when Bowie would show up on this series. I’m yet to actually listen to all of Blackstar but I’ll definitely make a point to because it’s a literal work of art how and when he released the album in relation to his death. what a man. Bowie has so many hits!

Love me some David Bowie! (I pronounce it bow like in “bow-tie”… wait, do other people not? XD) I think he was my gateway into that era of music back in high school, and coincidentally enough I’ve had “Starman” stuck in my head for the past couple days! This was such a great breakdown of his music!

Haha there’s definitely a split between bow-tie and take a bow! I think I lean towards the bow-tie pronunciation though. Oh that is a coincidence! So happy you enjoyed reading x

First Bowie song I heard was “Ground control to major Tom” (I can’t recall the title). I was in year 8 and we were made to sing it in class.
Wow, the memories. You really took me back with this one.
Might just have to relive my adolescence this evening with some old jams.
    Thanks!
