Well, the alliteration had to end somewhere didn’t it? For the last 5 months I’ve managed to coordinate the genre with the month; from January Jazz to May Motown. But as it turns out, there aren’t actually enough music genres for a second one beginning with J. So, I’ve had to shake it up a bit. This month we’re talking all things New Wave.
What is New Wave?
If you’re completely new to the genre, New Wave is essentially a synth-heavy, electronic pop/rock genre of music that was popular during the 1980s. Even if you aren’t familiar with the genre I’m sure you’ll know a few of the artists within it. When I think of New Wave music I instantly turn to The Cure and Depeche Mode. Both being huge parts of the genre. For my June playlist, I’ve focused in on 30 of my favourite tracks from the genre. A few of which are slightly less New Wave, and slightly more ‘general 80s’, than the others. As a huge 80s music fan (absolute 80s is my favourite radio station!) putting together this playlist has been one of my favourite things to do so far on my blog. In fact, I pretty much had these tracks in a playlist in my Spotify library already!
June’s New Wave
My Favourite’s from the Playlist…
As I mentioned earlier, The Cure are a huge part of New Wave so of course I featured them in this playlist! I have to admit, choosing only two tracks by them was a TASK. In the end I went with Close To Me and Just Like Heaven, but I could’ve easily included 6 of their tracks! If you’ve been following the series then you might remember me talking about my love of sampling when it comes to music in my May Motown playlist. I mentioned a favourite track of mine by The XX and the fact that it was sampled from a Hall & Oates track. Well I’ve put the original on this playlist; I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do). I could go on and on about how much I love each track on this playlist. But, instead I’ll leave you to give it a listen for yourself!
Have you listened to any New Wave music before? Who are some of your favourite artists from the genre? Let me know and make sure to tell me what you thought of the playlist as a whole!
