Restaurant Review: Delhi House Cafe, Liverpool

Family-run, modern Indian cuisine comes to Liverpool’s Albert Dock.

Brand new to Liverpool’s Albert Dock is Delhi House Cafe – a family-run Indian restaurant serving modern Indian cuisine in the heart of Liverpool. This is the second restaurant in the Delhi House Café family, with the first being located in Manchester’s Corn Exchange, and I don’t think they could’ve chosen a more beautiful spot in Liverpool for their second location.

Next door to Maray and Rough Handmade is where you’ll find Delhi House Cafe. I visited on a Wednesday evening which, for Liverpool, is often an incredibly quiet night out in the City Centre. But, I was surprised to see that Delhi House Cafe had a real buzz about it even on one of the quietest nights of the week – a good sign! At the front of the restaurant is the main dining area, which has floral banquette seating along the left wall and modern rattan and wood chairs alongside it. Then, through the back of the venue, in its own alcove, is the main bar area. I sat in the front window which, in my opinion, is the best seat in the house – perfect for people-watching.

The venue itself is really polished and beautiful, but another highlight (before I even tried the food) was how lovely the staff were. The team were so friendly, accommodating and more than happy to talk you through the menu. You can tell just how passionate the team is about the restaurant.

What to order at Delhi House Cafe, Liverpool

With such an extensive menu, there’s plenty to choose from at Delhi House Cafe – so much so that I kept deciding and backtracking on what I wanted to order. Typically, I go for a fish curry in Indian restaurants, often Goan Fish Curry, so when I spotted a Goan Prawn Curry (prawns simmered in a highly fragrant, fiery and tangy coconut sauce) on the menu at Delhi House I almost jumped the gun. But, I’d heard brilliant things about their signature Moms Buttered Chicken Tikka Masala, and when I saw that it was made with chicken thighs in the tandoor oven my decision was final. It had to be the Moms Buttered Chicken Tikka Masala.

Delhi House Cafe suggested going for a double-whammy of butter and pairing it with their butter naan but I ended up pairing my Moms Butter Chicken Tikka Masala with pilau rice and peshwari naan, along with a glass of Chenin Blanc wine. The curry was tangy, sweet and fragrant, with balance spiced and a super creamy texture. What made the dish so special for me, however, was that the chicken thighs were cooked in a Tandoor oven. This added a beautiful smoky flavour to the creamy sauce, which is something that you don’t often get at Indian restaurants.

If you’re after more of a special occasion restaurant for great Indian food in Liverpool, I don’t think you could go wrong with Delhi House Cafe.
