Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc review – a zesty New Zealand white wine

Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc

A zesty Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand.

New Zealand has become world-famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, and it remains one of the most popular white wines in the UK. Walk into almost any bar, pub or restaurant in the UK, and you’re bound to spot a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the wine list. It’s a classic choice and, for many drinkers, one of the first white wines they really get to know.

Typically, the style is defined by bright acidity, punchy tropical fruit and grassy notes. But if I’m honest, it’s not always my go-to. Too often, the tropical flavours feel overdone, tipping the wine into something that tastes more like synthetic fruit juice than a well-balanced white.

That said, I’m always happy to be proven wrong – especially when it means discovering a new favourite wine in a style I’d usually overlook. And if any bottle might change my mind, it would probably be one from Marlborough, New Zealand’s most famous Sauvignon Blanc region, made by one of its established producers: Allan Scott.

Allan Scott Family Winemakers

Founded in Marlborough, New Zealand, in 1990, Allan Scott Family Winemakers were among the first independent wineries in the region. Allan Scott himself brought nearly 40 years of experience in the wine industry to the venture, helping establish a strong reputation for quality from the very beginning.

Today, the winery remains firmly family-run. Allan and his wife Cathy lead the business, while their three children contribute across vineyards, winemaking and operations – keeping the family spirit at the heart of everything they do.

Tasting Notes: Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Sauvignon Blanc isn’t normally my style, especially if it leans too far into tropical territory. I’ll admit, though, the 2019 Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc was an immediate surprise. It opens with the crispness you expect from a dry white, and the intense acidity softens almost instantly, letting the fruit take centre stage.

The flavours are bright and inviting: passionfruit and tropical notes thrive at first, but don’t feel too overpowering, before being balanced by a fresh, zesty vibrancy. It’s juicy, full of character, and far from one-dimensional – exactly what you want from a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
