I’m shaking up my usual style of music post with this one. Rather than sharing a playlist I thought I’d take you on a bit of a journey of my music taste from the last 12/13 years or so…W O W I feel old! Everyone’s tastes change as we age and start to figure out who we are as people, especially in our music choices. With this in mind I thought why not write a post about it, focusing on my music journey. As I’m sure you’ll know from reading my blog, I am a huge music fan. Listening to and making music are some of my main passions, and of course making playlists. It only made sense for me to write a post about it all!
8-12: Pop Princesses
You’re lying to yourself if you say that you weren’t obsessed with the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé and Girls Aloud when you were younger. The Sugababes were my JAM back when I was a young girl and I’m definitely not ashamed to say it. Some of my best childhood memories were of me and my cousin making up our own routines to our favourite girl power groups! Nothing felt cooler to little me than pretending to be Rihanna in the Shut Up and Drive music video. To be honest I’d still feel pretty cool banging out my old-skool routines even now.
The entrance into my teens saw me fall in love with Indie Pop music. Think Two Door Cinema Club, Friendly Fires and The Maccabees – I was obsessed. I used to get so much of my music inspiration from my favourite indie films like (500) Days of Summer and even Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging and would listen to their soundtracks constantly. It was during this Indie music phase of mine that I went to my first real concert to see Two Door Cinema Club.
Later into my teens it was all about rock of all kinds for me. Punk, Alternative, everything. As I got older I started going to a lot more concerts simply because I was finally old enough to go with my friends! When I was about 14 going on 15 I started listening to what would quickly become my favourite band of all time; Arctic Monkeys. My older brother had told me about them when I was younger, when they were bringing out their first album, but I was too young to appreciate them at the time. But, when I got slightly older I became totally entranced by their music. To this day, they’re still my favourite band of all time.
19: 70s Disco and 80s New Wave
After leaving school and joining college for a year before I headed off to university I started to branch out with my music taste and learn a bit more about where music had developed from. I started listening to the radio more and more and discovered the radio station Absolute Radio 80s, which quickly became my go-to. Listening to the radio really got me into researching a bit more about music history and it was here that I developed an interest in the making of music which I’ve now incorporated into my university artwork! After listening to 80s music I went back a decade and listened to 70s music. My music taste at this time isn’t something that I’d call a phase of mine at all. It was more of the beginnings of my music discoveries and influences!
20+: A bit of everything
As I’ve gotten older I’ve started to care less about what people think about me. In all aspects of my life really! Particularly in my music taste. I’ve reached a point in my life where I appreciate so many different genres of music. Some days I’ll want to listen to rock and roll or go back to my indie-hit-loving days and others I just want to listen to boy bands and pop music. It’s important to realise that you shouldn’t feel embarrassed about having a varied taste in music or about loving a bit of cheesy pop! Of course I love a beautifully put together and technically amazing song but that doesn’t stop me from having a boogie to 1D when I feel like it. Just take a look at my Running Playlist – it’s pop-central!
