As you’ll know by now I’m all about the music content on my blog at the moment. I’ve been listening to more music than ever lately, with my new series The Legend Slot on the go and my monthly music magazine, groovin’, too! I’m working on plenty of new playlists of my own but, in the meantime, I thought I’d share some love for other playlists that I’ve been enjoying on Spotify recently as well.
What I love so much about Spotify is how easy it is to discover new music. Whether that’s through your ‘discover weekly’ or ‘release radar’ playlists. Or even through checking out a few new genres. And this month I’ve discovered a new genre of music. Well, not completely new… but it’s one that I haven’t listened to a lot of before. Bossa Nova.
A quick intro; Bossa Nova (meaning “new trend” or “new wave”) is a type of Brazilian music which became popular in the 50s/60s. Bringing together samba and jazz, Bossa Nova is often performed solely on a nylon-stringed guitar with the addition of vocals. However, it’s also widely performed in larger groups with a jazz-like arrangement – with the guitar playing the backing rhythm. Some notable artists from the genre include João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá.
Bossa Nova Spotify Playlist
This is the ultimate chilled Summer vibe playlist. I’ve been listening to it in the garden on the slightly sunnier days that we’ve had since being on lockdown here in the UK. I think it’s absolutely perfect for any Spring/Summer day. Whether you’re reading in the sun, doing a bit of gardening, cooking or even whilst having a few drinks (at home of course!).
There are quite a few completely instrumental tracks on the playlist which are perfect for relaxing. But there’s also some really great party tracks that you could definitely have a little dance to. A must listen for sure!
Roots Rising Spotify Playlist
My second discovery is the Roots Rising playlist. I’d say this is more of a background music sort of playlist than the Bossa Nova one. Simply because most of the tracks are incredibly chilled. For anyone who’s currently having to work from home, I think this could be a really great playlist to WFH to.
There were only a handful of artists whose names I recognised before I gave the playlist a listen, including Jade Bird, Leon Bridges and Ben Howard. So it was a great playlist for discovering loads of new artists.
Sweet Soul Sunday Spotify Playlist
Sweet Soul Sunday is a bit of a long-time favourite of mine when it comes to Spotify playlists. I’ve been listening to it for around a a year or so, so I guess it’s about time that I post about it! The playlist itself has been edited plenty of times within the period that I’ve been listening. And each time it’s updated with a load of great soul tunes. So expect it to change fairly frequently.
I do love that they change the playlist up all the time. It gives you time to discover new music without getting bored of the same tracks. It’s actually been updated today with a whole new set of songs! Looking at the new playlist I can already spy some of my favourite songs and artists. Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On (one of my favourite songs ever!), Aretha…of course, Sam Cooke and Gregory Porter’s Hey Laura. But there are also quite a few that I’m not familiar with. So I’ll be going and giving that a listen later!
Do you listen to pre-made Spotify playlists on the regular? Or do you prefer making your own? What are some Spotify playlists that you’d recommend to me? I’d love to know!
