I was really torn about whether or not to bother setting (and posting) some goals for this year. But in the end I decided to go for it. Which is why this is coming out a little late, just over a week into January 2021. After the year that we’ve had, it just goes to show that you really don’t know what’s around the corner. I know that almost all of us will’ve set ourselves goals that just weren’t possible to achieve in 2020, and that’s okay! But I think because of the fact that you never really know what’s going to happen, this year I’ve decided to only set myself goals related to my hobbies and knowledge-based goals.
I’m not putting any numbers in any of my goals. Nothing too specific or stressful. Just simply goals that I know I’m going to enjoy working towards, and if I don’t achieve them all then I don’t achieve them all. Let’s just take the pressure off this year, eh?
First, What Were My 2020 Goals?
So before I get onto my 2021 goals I thought I’d quickly go back and reflect on my 2020 goals. You can read the full post here.
Take My Blog To The “Next Level” (whatever that may be)
I guess this was a fairly vague goal. I mentioned working with more brands, a rebrand and monetising my content as potential meanings behind the term taking my blog to the “next level”. And I guess to a certain extent I did achieve a few of these goals-within-a-goal (for lack of a better term). 2020 was the year that I finally figured out what I wanted my blog to be.
If you’ve been here since the beginning then you might remember that Female Original actually started as a university and lifestyle blog. I dabbled in a bit of everything for a few years, from food to fashion to university life to blogging tips. Even at the beginning of 2020 I was still writing about a fair few topics. But around halfway through 2020 I decided to just write about the topics that I found the most natural and fun to write about; music and drinks. And I think without 2020 being the way it was, I might’ve never have come to the same conclusion.
Find a more permanent job
Let’s just say the search continues on this one and leave it there shall we…
Take Up A New Hobby
My final 2020 goal was to take up a new hobby. Again this was a fairly broad goal and, at the time, was a bit of a cheat goal because I’d already planned to join a ballroom and latin class. Well, I ended up stopping a few weeks in because it just wasn’t my thing. I enjoyed the dancing itself but there was absolutely no one there who was my age so it didn’t have the social aspect I was hoping for. Looking back now, I would’ve had to stop even if I did enjoy it because of lockdown.
3 Goals For 2021: Continue To Learn Other Languages
Language is something that I’ve always been interested in, and led me to study Spanish throughout school. But over the last few years I’ve found that my interest has really grown. I’m a huge fan of foreign films and am always watching foreign language TV shows on Netflix. Often I find myself being drawn to Spanish films/TV shows because I have an understanding of the language. But during 2020 I found myself getting really into Korean dramas. A few weeks back I was watching a K-drama and suddenly thought to myself…why don’t I try and learn a bit of Korean?
I’m no stranger to trying to learn a new language. You might remember me mentioning that I tried to learn Italian a few months back in my 5 Ways That I’m Spending My Time post. But, to be completely honest, I really didn’t stick with it. In my head, because I knew a fair bit of Spanish I assumed Italian would be easy enough to pick up. But I realised that because I’m not super fluent in Spanish, I actually ended up just confusing myself trying to learn Italian and work on my Spanish at the same time. Which brings me back to Korean.
Continue To Learn Other Languages: Why Korean?
My thought process behind choosing to learn Korean is that it’s so different to Spanish that there’s absolutely no way that I’m going to confuse the two. Another thing is that I’m so fascinated by the Korean alphabet (Hangul). The idea of learning a whole different alphabet to English is just so exciting to me. And finally it’s the practical use of it. Since I watch so many Korean shows I’d love to be able to actually understand a few words here and there. Obviously I’m not expecting to become a Korean speaking boss by the end of 2021. But if I could pick up a few words in some of my favourite K-dramas then I’ll take that as a win!
3 Goals For 2021: Discover A New Genre Of Music
I remember back in 2018 when I was setting my goals for 2019 I mentioned that I wanted to learn more about arts & culture. Specifically I wanted to learn more about jazz music in 2019, which I ended up having the most amazing time doing. For me goals should be fun to work towards, and that’s why I’ve chosen to set myself a similar goal this year. To discover a new genre of music.
What do I mean by this exactly? Well I basically mean learning more about a specific genre of music that exists. In 2020 I ended up developing a love for Bossa Nova music (as a result of Lockdown 1.0) and I absolutely loved exploring the genre. Bossa Nova music really helped me get through Lockdown last year and so I’d love to find a new genre to enjoy during the current lockdown. I haven’t decided which genre it’ll be as of yet but I’m pretty bloody excited to discover which one it’ll be. If you’ve got any suggestions then send them my way.
3 Goals For 2021: Watch More ‘Iconic’ Films
My final goals for 2021 is another fun one. I don’t know about you but I’ve got a to-be-watched list of films that has just been building up over the last few years. I keep adding and adding to the list but never actually watching any of them. I’ve now built up a list of probably over 100 iconic films that I seriously need to watch. 2021 is the year I finally start working my way through them. Who’s with me?
Have you set yourself any goals for the year ahead? Let me know what they are in the comments. And if you have any music genre suggestions for me then send them my way!
