Reflecting On My 5 Goals for 2019

Right back in January I shared a little post about my 5 Goals for 2019. So to kick off the New Year I thought it’d only be right to reflect back on those goals. Let’s see how I got on…

Graduate in the Summer

Graduating in the Summer was definitely my biggest achievement of 2019. After spending three years working towards my BA in Fine Art, it was a great feeling to finally achieve it! If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet you can read the full graduation post here.

Go To A Meet-Up

I’d told myself that 2019 was the year that I’d finally meet up with other bloggers. I had no idea how I was going to do it but after moving home to Liverpool, post-university, it somehow ended up happening! In Liverpool we’re so lucky in that we always seem to have new bars, restaurants and venues popping up around town. It’s one of my favourite things about the city.

With new venues comes opening nights and amazing opportunities for bloggers to attend launches/press nights etc. So shortly after coming back to Liverpool I found myself at my first ever blogging meet-up at Siren. It was such a great experience to finally meet some local bloggers!

Since then I’ve been so lucky to be invited to other press nights across the city including Jimmy’s (bar, restaurant and music venue), The Liverpool Gin Distillery, LUSH and even Pandora at The Ivy in Manchester.

Gain More Work Experience

2019 definitely saw me gaining plenty of new work experience. I started the year with another trip to London Fashion Week where I worked at a PR agency during LFW. Read more about that here or to read about my first fashion week experience click here. Through this I actually ended up getting a long term internship with the agency!

Since I was studying only half an hour away from London it was easy enough for me to travel into the city once a week for my internship. This ended up being such a valuable experience and is something that I had an amazing time doing. Throughout the year I also worked as a brand ambassador, a committee member for my sports society, and of course continued running my blog!

Since moving back home in the summer, I’ve worked at two different PR agencies (a mix of lifestyle, music, fashion and toys/games PR). One of them was as a placement and the other was as a freelancer. Again this has all been great experience for me when it comes to building my CV. I’m yet to find a full-time job but hopefully something will come up soon!

Maintain or Improve my Blog Stats

5K on Twitter: I started the year at 4.3K followers on Twitter and managed to reach my goal of 5K in July! This felt like such a milestone for me in terms of blogging. I’d almost had my blog for 2 years at that time so to hit 5K was absolutely amazing.

10K monthly views on Pinterest: I hit this goal quite early on in the year and have since more than doubled my monthly Pinterest views. But to be completely honest I still have absolutely no idea how to get my blog to benefit from Pinterest! For now Pinterest is definitely on the back-burner in terms of where my priorities lie in blogging.

700 on Instagram: When I set this goal I’d lost all faith in ever reaching it. Instagram is such a hit and miss platform for me. I’m not a big fan of it but I have it anyway (who else feels the same?). That being said I managed to exceed this goal and I’m finishing the year with over 800 followers.

A bonus (not so) little extra for me was doubling my blog views this year! I was NOT expecting to achieve this in 2019 so when earlier this month I saw my blog views tip over double of what they were last year I couldn’t believe it. It’s such a great feeling seeing the extra work that I’ve put into my blog this year pay off in the end. Same again next year? (I’m not so sure haha!)

Learn More About Arts & Culture

This was probably my favourite goal for 2019. As much as setting statistic-based goals is important, a knowledge-based goal is always something that I enjoy setting myself. In my 2019 goals post I wrote “This year I’m hoping to develop a lot more of a knowledge of the arts, and more specifically music” and since then I’ve definitely achieved this!

If you’ve somehow managed to miss all 12 of my monthly playlists (or if you’re new to my website) then you might not know that I’ve actually been creating a playlist focused on a different genre of music every month in 2019. The concept behind the series, Music Monthly, was to get us all to branch out of our go-to artists when it comes to listening to music. Everyone has their favourites, which is great, but it’s always nice to try out something new.

So I set out to share a new playlist every month. I challenged myself to learn about 12 genres of music and put together a 30-ish song playlist every month. Some months were significantly easier than others to put together (simply because I already knew a fair bit about certain genres) but I had a lot of fun putting every one together.

The full list:

I mentioned in my goal that I specifically wanted to learn more about jazz music. And I feel as though I have! I’ve definitely got a long way to go in terms of learning about jazz but these playlists were a great starting point. Which playlist did you enjoy listening to the most?

Goals for 2020

After somehow managing to complete all five of my goals it’s time to set a few more for the year (…and DECADE) ahead.

Take My Blog To The “Next Level” (whatever that may be)

To be honest I’m not entirely sure what the next level for my blog is. Is it working with more brands? Is it a rebrand? Is it monetising my content? Maybe all of them! I guess we’ll just have to see. Whatever it is…2020 is the year I want to do it and I want to know what you’d like to see next!

Find a more permanent job

So, as you’ll know by now I’ve graduated university and I’ve been doing a few little bits of work here and there. But I’d love a more permanent job. Ideally something creative where I’m using my degree would be amazing. But finding that perfect job is proving to be a difficult task! For now I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and keep a lookout for opportunities.

Take Up A New Hobby

I guess this is actually a little bit of a cheat because I’m actually joining a new dance class next week. However, I’m setting myself the goal of sticking with my dance class throughout the year. I think it’s easy to tell yourself you’ll take up a new hobby in the New Year, whether that be a sport or a club, but actually sticking with it is the challenge. So not only do I want to take up a new hobby but I want to stick with it!

There you have it, a full reflection on my 2019 goals, and a few new ones for this year as well. How did you get on with your goals from last year? Have you set yourself any new ones for the year ahead? And let me know what you want to see more of on the blog this year!

I totally wish blogger meet-ups were more possible for this Central Valley, California girl :’) Blogging seems like it’s so much more popular in the UK, and here in the States, I feel like you have to live in the more popular areas on either of the Coasts in order to have that opportunity. So great to hear about your 2019 successes! Wishing you all the luck with your 2020 goals; you’re gonna smash them! xx

I love reading other peoples’ goals! I hope to visit two new countries next year and will likely be Honduras and Iceland. I also hope to read at least 52 books (my job allows for a lot of Internet-free down time) and explore more of the West Coast USA where I live! Best of luck in 2020 x
