Workout With Me

As the academic year has come to an end, with it has my regular workouts in my university sports societies. With deadlines and exams having taken over the summer term, training sessions took a back seat over revision and coursework. Now that I’m finished and home for the summer, it’s so important to keep up with my regular exercise. I’ve never been someone who enjoys the gym. To me, exercise has to be fun for me to do it. So, any exercise that I engage with is is usually group exercise with a big social scene (with hard work involved too of course!). However, when I’m back home for the summer, group workouts aren’t a possibility because I’m away from my usual workout squad. As annoying as this is, it does give me time to try out a new workout regime and this time I’m trying out running. Yes that’s right, the girl who hates boring, solo exercise is giving running a go.

Nike Running

Not going to lie to you guys, I always hated the idea of running. In the past I tried running and ended up exhausted after about 10 minutes of pure misery. As someone who’s danced and exercised my entire life I always wondered why I found running so difficult. I’m not the most in-shape person although I’m definitely not out of shape either so why did I struggle so much? Well, recently I decided to give it another go. I tried my first ever road run (after only having ran on a treadmill). I downloaded the Nike Running app and set off on my run. The app tracked my average speed, distance, calories burned amongst other stats and figures letting me know how I got on. I spent about half the time power walking and half the time jogging/running and then analysed the data afterwards.

Road Running

When I looked at my average speed (in the parts where I was actually running) I discovered that the pace that I run at naturally was a fair bit slower than what I’d been running at (well…more like staggering through) on treadmills in the past. After finding this out I decided to give running on a treadmill another go. Instead of attempting to run at the speed that I ran at in the past I decided to run at the pace that the app had told me was my average. The results were insane! I ended up being able to run for almost 40 minutes straight without getting too tired at all! I was so surprised to find out how much of a difference a slight decrease in speed could make.

Go For It!

If you’re looking to get into a new exercise with zero budget needed then definitely give running a go! Even if, like me, you’ve struggled in the past just slow down a bit and keep trying. I thought I was completely hopeless until I just slowed my pace down a tiny bit. That small change made such a huge difference in the exercise and my enjoyment of it all as a whole. Get yourself a banging playlist and go for it!

Thanks for reading! Let me know what exercise you guys do and if running is a part of your usual workout schedule. If you’re thinking of getting into running then comment below and we can power through running together! I’d love to find more beginner runners like myself.

This has definitely inspired me to start exercising again! I tend to give up after a few days, its just laziness though. I admire those who keep it up!

I love running but I don’t do it enough! Now my exams are over, I alot more time to do more excercise outside the gym. I have never heard or tried the Nike running app before, I was thinking of buying a Fitbit but this sounds like a cheaper/free alternative
